Welding "Black Iron" pipe fittings

Dec 18, 2020· I don't know the etymology of the "black iron" term, but all the black iron pipe I've ever dealt with (I've stick- and tig-welded plenty of it without ever an issue) appeared to be just "mild steel." On the other hand, the "black iron" fittings I've dealt with all looked like cast iron or cast steel.
